EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased: What Employers Need To Know
The Government of India has approved a significant change to the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) wage ceiling.
The announcement is not simply a proposal or a recommendation waiting for final Cabinet approval. The Union Cabinet has already approved the enhancement from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.
The wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The Union Cabinet approved the proposal on 16 September 2026 and the Government has announced that the revised ceiling will take effect from 17 September 2026.
For HR professionals, employers, payroll teams and employees, this is an important development because the change may affect EPF eligibility, employee deductions, employer contributions, payroll processing and employee take-home salary.
But there is an important distinction to understand: The increase has been approved and the effective date has been announced. It is no longer merely a proposal awaiting Cabinet approval. However, employers should follow the detailed implementation instructions and operational directions issued by EPFO/Ministry of Labour & Employment for actual payroll and ECR processing.
The ₹25,000 figure should not be interpreted to mean that every employee will simply have ₹3,000 deducted as PF.
The actual PF contribution depends on the applicable EPF rules, the employee's PF wage, membership status and the final implementation instructions.
Therefore, employers should wait for the applicable operational guidance before making assumptions about the exact deduction calculation.
